My wife has many allergies. We currently use coal for heat, but she wants to move where the heat is gas. Will gas be better for her than coal?

I'm allergic to lots of things, including some medications. What exactly is an allergy?

Cancer

Please tell me about chemo thearpy. What happens when you go for Chemo. Go where? What happens?

My husband is 80 years old and he has T-cell lymphoma stage iv. What would you think his life expecenty would be?

My mother has been through two rounds of chemo in the last 7 weeks. Each round is 3 days followed by 3 week recuperation period. After her last round (last week), she suddenly ceased being able to touch one of her heels to the floor and experiences terrible pain on the sole of same foot. She said the sole feels like an old piece of leather, and feels the foot is bigger than it actually is. The sole is also very red except for the arch area, and is sometimes purplish. Could this be neuropathy? Her oncologist thinks it's too soon to be a side effect from the chemo but I disagree. She is not diabetic.

Cardiovascular Disorders

I am a 26-year-old female, very active and eating healthy. Lately I have been experiencing pulsing in my ear. When I gave blood yesterday, my blood pressure was high at 150/92. Usually my pressure is normal. Can you please tell me if the pulsing is a symptom of high blood pressure or if possibly there is something else wrong?

My blood pressure is reasonable and sometimes a little high and sometimes a little low. Recently my ears started ringing and I' m wondering if this could have something to do with it. However, for many years I used Q-Tips to clean my ears but I stopped for no reason a few months ago, and now I do not have any external wax in my ears as before. Could it be wax?

My son is 19 old has blood pressure 140/90. We discovered it a year ago during his physical exam. His physician can not find anything wrong with him. My son is athletic, plays basketball, lifts weights.

What is normal blood pressure for a 30 year old woman?

What are the differences between heart attack symptoms and panic attacks?

What are the possible causes of sudden rapid heartbeat and feeling light-headed?

Today while at work I had severe pain on the right side of my chest. It lasted about 15 min. and I took asprin right away. I felt like I was going to die!! I did not want to alarm anyone so I got up and tried to ease the pain by standing. I still felt the pain. It felt like my liver or something was pushing really hard near my breast, worse than a muscle spasm. Is this something I should concern myself with?

My mother has normal blood pressure all the time, but when she goes to the doctor's office she is so afraid that they might find some thing wrong with her that her doctor's measurement of the blood pressure is way above the usual. She measures her blood pressure every day with a blood pressure machine and at the pharmacey. She tells her doctor that the readings that they take are ununsual and they do not believe her. Now they want to give her more medication for the high blood pressure. What can I do to help?

I am a 47 year old female and, recently, after yard work and other chores, my pulse rate will shoot up to about 150bpm. My face becomes red and, if I lay down, I can feel my heart beating. My blood pressure is normally around 110/65. Suggestions?

I am a 37 yr. old female with a heart history of premature beats. Lately I have been under alot of stress and was wondering whether it has contributed to my recent health concerns. First concern: A little over a month ago a vein in my leg burst which was very painful. The area turned black and blue and lasted over a week. There was a significant feeling of numbness below the area of the bruise. Secondly, last week while spending the afternoon up in the mountains, I experienced a feeling of tightening in the chest area. This feeling lasted for over 2 hours, then there was a sharp pain which almost took my breath away for about 30 seconds. Finally, today, I am losing all strength in my right arm. This problem began about one month ago with feeling of uncomfortableness to slight constant pain to weakness. Please advise.

My friend was having signs of a heart attack. The doctors did an ekg but said they found nothing. Her pulse rate was around 47. She thinks that she did have a heart attack...

Communicable/Infectious Disorders

My boyfriend and I have been together for several months. Occasionally he gets cold sores on his mouth. He says that he has had this condition since childhood. Although he says that it is only contagious when he has sores that weep mucus, I have not made direct contact until they are completely healed. Several months ago he had a cold sore that was barely visible and did not weep at all, and in that case we did make direct mouth to mouth contact. Last week he had a large, painful cold sore that scabbed over. Although I did not have direct contact with the sore, we were intimate. There was one point at which his sore touched the skin above my mouth which I washed with soap immediately. I have had no symptoms and he has told me that he has not infected girlfriends in the past even when they did have contact while he had a sore. I am wondering how likely it is that I could become infected with herpes through indirect contact - ie., remnants of the virus on his hands and clothing.

What is Celulitis? What are the treatment options?

My daughter (age 11), was diagnosed with cellulitis caused by a spider bite. Can you give me any infromation about this condition?

I'm a 26 yr. old woman. I've had one child and had a history of displacia. Last week, I had a severe dental infection. My dentist prescribed Amoxil and an anti-inflammatory pill. Since I've been taking the medication, I've started to get a burning sensation in my vaginal area. I have a fiancée so I've been monogamous for the past year. I have had herpes before so I am confused. I don't know if I am having an allergic reaction to the medication or if I am having a recurrence of the herpes. Please let me know, so I can stop taking the medicine if it could be that, or, if it's the other, I can get an exam.

Is it true that mineral water with gas can cause celulitis?

I am related to someone who has been exposed to TB. What should I do?

My friends tell me that there is an herbal medicine good for cold and flu symptoms, Echinacea extract, available in health food stores. Is it safe?

Dermatological Disorders

My 12 year old daughter has sever acne. What is the best over the counter product for her to use? How long should a product be used before deciding it's not helping?

My insurance dermatology diagnoses codes are: 173 BCC and Scc 232 Bowen's disease of the skin. Can you give me any information about these?

I am a 23 yr. old female who has been experiencing dizziness for four days now. I was sick with the flu for several days and then began feeling better. However, on Monday evening I began getting dizzy, not severely, but I felt rather funny. When I woke up on Tuesday I was fine, but after being on my feet for a half an hour I began feeling dizzy again. I made an appointment to see a doctor and was diagnosed with vertigo. I was given a medication known as "anti-vert" and was told this would relieve my symptoms. I am to take the pills every 6 hrs. as necessary and if my symptoms persist for more than 2 wks. I have to go back for a follow-up. Well, my problem is the medication is having no affect on me at all. I am still feeling disoriented and have had to leave work early every day since I first began experiencing this. Is there anything I can do to relieve these symptoms? I feel fine as long as I am laying down and not doing anything. Unfortunately, this is not an option I have. My doctor said 2 wks., but I don't know how much longer I can deal with this.

Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders

Some days when I bend down (head to toes), I feel throbbing pressure (like blood in a head rush) along the my neck, by the jaw, more painful on the left side. After a few seconds it starts to go away. My upper sinuses are rather clogged, and they hurt too when I do this. Strange, but it seems like belching (even going to the bathroom) alleviates it. It's only when I bend down. I'm a 23-year-old male and have never had high blood pressure. Is this something to see a doctor about?

I have had a typical cold stuffy nose, mucas, slight cough, this morning when I awoke, I could barely hear out of my ears (they feel like I just experienced a change in altitude). What is it and what can I do?

Twice in the last 6 months I have had sudden attacks of vertigo lasting only a few minutes. Three days ago, I had another attack and it has lasted for 3 days now. Have had a headache off and on everyday for 2 months now. Also...every morning my nose bleeds some, sometimes during the day when I blow it there is blood and dried blood. This has been going on for over 2 months. Have taken cephalexin (one round), no change. I quit smoking (from 2 packs a day) about 3 months ago. Do these symptoms ring a bell with you? Also have a ringing in one ear and a few pops in the right ear on occasion. The vertigo is very debilatating. Need to work..can't drive! Help! Does any of this come with stopping smoking?

I'm a 42 year old man, weigh 210, 5 ft 9 1/2, not in the greatest shape but do OK for my age. I work as a systems administrator for a large firm. The work can be stressful at times. Have a question about the glands below the jaw area. It seems that I have had a right swollen gland for the last 3 years. It comes seems and goes. I thought it was from a Wisdom tooth was giving me problems. But! I had the impacted wisdom removed about 6 months ago.and just recently, the gland became infected again. I also have had several sinus infections within this time also, which has given me a bad case of Vertigo at times. I have visited my physician, and all he does is give me antibiotics for this problem of swollen glands. He really doesn't tell me what's causing my gland to swell. Do you have any suggestions for me?

After swimming 2 days ago, my 45 year old girlfriend still has pressure in her ears. Please advise of a way to relieve this.

My husband and daughter were playing next to me and he tickled her and threw her up...her head hit my nose hard...she was ok, but my nose was hit hard. How do I tell if it's broken or just bruised...there is no bleeding, but it hurts to the touch...would I not even be able to bear the pain of touching it if it were broken? I put ice on it. there is some swelling on one side. I can breathe well.

What is the "rare sinus infection" disease I'm told I have? I've been to the doctor but would like more info. I have a bad headache, all my bones feel broken, my glands are swollen and I can't get out of bed. I'm on antibiotics and pain pills.

What do you recommend I take for a severe head cold, stuffy nose, scratchy throat and cough?

Endocrinology and Metabolic Disorders

I am male, 45 and recently have been feeling frequently dizzy. HDL=27 (down from 38); LDL=98; triglycerides=390 (up from 98) What's going on, possibly hypothyroidism?

What can happen to a person whose potassium level is too high?

I have a very close friend who has been referred to an Endocrinologist by her OB/GYN. She is 24 and has never been pregnant or miscarried. She is experiencing problems with her breasts lactating. She says it does not occur with any pattern, randomly and without warning. She said the fluid was of a creamy color and also of a "dirty water" color. She will be seeing this specialist once her second-round of blood work comes back. But the 1st round of blood work run by her OB/GYN, all came back with level within the correct guidelines. They are now checking her Thyroid level among other things on the second attempt. Have you ever heard of symptoms she is experiencing?

What are the symptoms for low electrolytes?

I was recently told I had hyperthyroidism, yet my Doctor said I should be losing weight. Instead, I have gained 40 pounds for no apparent reason. Is this possible? I am baffled.

What is the normal glucose count?

I have been hearing a lot about auto-immune disorders. They sound positively frightening. Are hypothyroidism and hyperparathyroidism auto-immune disorders? If so, do they ever cure themselves?

I recently saw a news program about hypothyroidism, stating that if you have it during pregnancy, your unborn child could have a lower IQ. The program stated that the symptoms for hypothyroidism were fatigue, depression and dry skin. Those symptoms seem vague; can you give me more information?

I'm 29 and I have high level serum calcium (about 12 mg/dl) and parathormon (about 200) in my blood. There is not any adenom or anormaly in my parathyroid gland (as a result of the synthigraphy and ultrasonography examination). Can any surgery be recommended in this case? Which gland will be removed?

My 25 y/o daughter has been dx. with hyperparathyroidism by way of repeated kidney stones. She has had lithotripsy X 2 successfully the second time around. Now, eight months later, she has an obstructed ureter secondary to another stone. Serum Calcium, of course, is elevated. Are there dietary regimens recommended? Don't want to rush into surgery! Please direct us as to where we can go for more treatment options.

I'm 34 and have been having these same problems for about 7 yrs. right after I had my second child. After I eat I get severe pains in my stomach. Sometimes it's cramps. My stomach gets very bloated and I get diarrhea. It doesn't happen all the time, but a lot. I also I'm very tired all the time. I also get dizzy and light headed if I skip a meal. I have been to several doctors and have had some blood test and stool samples done. I also had a test done to check my small intestines. All the test have come back normal. Friends of mine of suggested I have my thyroid checked and check for diabetes. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

I have NIDDM (Diabetes) and take "Minidiab 5mg" twice daily and "Glucobay 100" before dinner. I believe the Minidiab encourages the natural output of the pancreas and Glucobay slows done the absorption of foods. For the first 6 to 8 months, I could often feel the onset of low blood sugar and would regularly blood test between 2 and 3 before dinner. Now, as opposed to being in the lower to mid range of what is acceptable, I find I am increasingly in the mid to upper or over levels of what is acceptable. My diet is not really any different from when I first started the oral medication. My work and exercise 'load' are about the same but I know I should do more exercise. I do smoke but less than before. I am at the upper end of my ideal weight range and I have experienced some weight gain and I am lethargic now. Time to adjust the level of drugs, change drugs or do something else? Any ideas??

My 7-year-old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago. I am her primary caretaker and I am the only one who gives her twice-daily injections. I would like to go away for a few days in August, and was wondering if the Visiting Nurse Services could be used to deliver her shots twice daily. If so, how do I go about this and is it covered by insurance. We have HIP insurance. Also, a friend of mine was recently given Wellbutrin by his doctor in order to relieve stress. What do you know about this medication and what do you think?

Hyperparathyroid, signs and symptoms, intervention, test, surgery, causes, prognosis.

Had total hysterectomy 3 yrs.ago. Am hyperparathyroid and hypo thyroid. Worried about osteo developing. Am taking.112mg synthroid and just started 0.3mg premarin. My Endochronologist says I dont need to do anything special???!

Is there a connection between diabetes and blindness?

My son is a Type I diabetic and was told after his last urine test that he has a high protein level. This was the first such result and another test was ordered in 3 months. What does this mean, and is there any way to bring down this level through diet and exercise? What are the health risks of a high protein level? The doctor says he may need medication to control this. A diabetic's schedule must revolve around administering insulin and further complications are never welcome, especially at age 16.

My friend was just diagnosed with hypoglycemia after delivering a baby. She had gestational diabetes during her pregnancy. Now, she has difficulty with numbness due to her low blood sugar, about 3 hours after eating. What type of diet should she be following?

My friend tells me that calcium is an important nutrient for women. Why?

I have had swelling in my right leg for several years now. I have been to two different doctors and they both say it's just fluid. The past several months, the swelling seems to be worse and I have been having pain behind my knee and in my calf. It also feels like there are chills running through my leg. Some days when I leave work it feels really tight. When I get up the next morning, the swelling has only gone down just a little. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get to see my ankle bones on the right foot ever again. I am a 36 year old female and I have been off of birth control pills for two years now. This problem started about three years before that.

My husband is a construction worker(buildings). Lately he has been complaining that he has severe foot pain under his feet. He says it feels like a horrible headache, only in the feet. Every morning he can barely walk. He says as soon as they warm up they are okay. But as the day goes on he says they start throbbing and can hardly wait to sit by evening. He is 37 and otherwise very healthy. He will not go to the doctor. Please help.

I have not had any wound in that area and I can't remember receiving any trauma either.

My husband has RA. He takes 10 mg of prednisone, 100mg of voltaren-xr, 20 mg of arava a day. He was on mthotrexate 6 pills of 2.5 mg a week, and told me today that for the past two years once every 2 months he has bloody stools. Obstetrical/Gynecological Disorders

I have a question regarding pregnancy testing. I have taken 3 tests, 2 different brands, same results, the result was the solid pink test indicator line was very bold, the result window line was barely there, extremely faint and light. Two of the test were the First Response brand that could be taken 3 days before the period starts, the other was EPT, that can be taken the day expected to start or any day after. My husband said the lines are to light, very visible and it probably is just where the line should be if it was there one. Do you know anything about these tests? Is any line in the result window a "positive" result or is the light barely seen line just where a line would be in a positive result. Also, I have PCOS and have very irregular or absent periods. That makes it even more difficult to tell. I do not have insurance or I would get a blood test done at my DR. I have to take provera to regulate and don't know what I should do based on these 3 results. Tests I have taken before the test area was plan white. I never noticed a faint line in the test area before. I do plan on taking another test in a week if nothing starts, but would still like advise on reading the test incase I see the same result again. Can you help me read these tests?

I have had problems with hot flashes for two years now. My GYN put me on Ogin 1.25 daily. Now they said I have low blood sugar and have put me on Glucophage 1000 mg per day thinking it would also help with hot flashes, which it has not. She is not sure what else to do. I wake up every hour during the night with hot flashes and often during the day. When I was in her office last time I had a hot flash and she noticed that my entire body was warm and my blood pressure increased to 160/90. Then it went back down after the flash disappeared. My son was diagnosed with ADHD. He is eight years old. He weights about 58 lbs. He will be going into the 3rd grade. We've tried Ritalin. Last September we started at 5mg and then 10 mg 1 time per day. For 2-3 months this was enough. Then for some reason, it wasn't. We increased it another 5 mg. Still there was difficulty at school with the excessive talking and some impulsivity. In January, we tried Concerta at low levels first. Now we're at 54mg a day. That's almost 6 times the amount as September's dosage. The teacher still complains about the talking, impulsivity and inconsistencies on a day to day basis. We visit the Neurologist quarterly and monitor it closely. I can't help this gut feeling that 54mg is too much for a little boy. I was very upset when the Neurologist suggested we even go higher (72mg.!). The pharmacist did indicate that there are no recommended doses for any age or weight. I thought that he said that 54 mg was the max. There doesn't seem to be any place where I can get information on this. Can you give me your information.

I have a child that is physically unable to focus his attention. It's kind of like he is wound up too tight. Anyway, I was curious if there is any natural alternatives to Ridilin-type treatments.

Why shouldn't children be given Aspirin?

My family has just bought an ear thermometer. We have three children, ages 9, 12 & 14 (Boys) and, when they aren't feeling well and feverish, this seems to be a poor substitute. Orally it often seems that boys have difficulty due to mouth breathing, with one pediatrician's office still taking rectal when oral isnt working. I feel this is best too, but wanted to know a professional opinion.

Miscellaneous

I recently finished cutting app. 200 stencils from 10mil acetate sheets. The process included using a heated art blade to cut the sheets. I heated the blade with a small butane torch. Since that time I've experienced chest pain and hair loss. Inasmuch as acetate art sheets are not usually used in this way (exerting heat) and thereby changing the chemical composition of the material from a solid into a gas (?) or at least releasing the fumes into the air, I am concerned as to what the risks were as to toxicity. I did not use a mask or any other protective safety measures. It never entered my mind that I may be putting myself at risk.

I would like to know how would I be come a visiting nurse, and whom to contact.

I have a 68 year old mother who suffers from a number of health conditions including Type 2 diabetes, Gout, Hypertension, and difficulty walking. She does not drive and tends to spend the majority of her time in her apartment. My brother and I share the responsibilities of taking care of her and taking her to doctor's visits etc. Both of us are limited in the time we can spend in helping my mother in her daily activities. I would like to speak to someone about services she could receive to help improve her daily activity and situation.

I live in Orange County NY and my 83 year old mother is in a nursing home in Ulster County. I am considering at home care for Mom (in my home) and was wondering if VNS services Orange County.

I am a college student looking for a two year nursing program in our area. I am having a rough time finding one. I thought someone from VNS might be able to e-mail me info on one. Thank you for your help

Although I live in Westchester, my mother who's 83 lives in Dutchess County with my brother. She is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease but is still reasonably functional. She is in excellent physical health. She spends days with my sister and weekends with me. However, I'm a single mother who works seven days a week. I want to share the responsibility of caring for her but I can't be home with her all day Saturday and Sunday. My sister, brother and I have spoken about "placing" her in a home. I was wondering if she can be placed in Westchester, near me, or if we need to look in Dutchess County because she resides there most of the time. If so, is there an agency we can turn to for help with this matter? I'd appreciate your assistance. Also, if she is staying with me over the weekend and I need someone to care for her for a few hours, is that one of the things your agency does? My thanks for your attention to this matter.
