VNSW in your Community
“Ask The Visiting Nurse”

VNSW’s “Ask The Visiting Nurse” (ATVN) program makes a very real, human difference – where it counts most – directly in the community, at the patient level, personally, one-on-one. Community sites are located in Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Eastchester, Greenburgh, Harrison, Katonah, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Ossining, Peekskill, Pelham, Port Chester, Rye, Tarrytown, Tuckahoe, White Plains and Yonkers. In addition to this one-on-one service, the ATVN program conducts support groups to seniors with mental health issues.

The highly-trained and experienced Visiting Nurses provide monthly health screenings at 68 Westchester senior residences and community sites (click here for the current schedule), making over 10,000 contacts with seniors each year. During these visits, the seniors are given the opportunity to talk with a nurse about key health issues such as medications and nutrition, with the expectation of receiving medically sound answers. Equally important, the nurses listen to the seniors, providing them with individualized health information and the ability to better care for themselves.

When necessary, the nurse will urge the senior to see a physician. By thoroughly explaining the necessity for the visit, the nurse makes it easier for the senior to talk to the doctor, thereby encouraging better communication between the seniors and their physicians. It empowers the seniors to “take charge” of their healthcare and function as well-informed healthcare consumers.

ATVN also provides exercise, safety and education programs at several assisted living facilities. These sessions, presented to small groups to encourage maximum participation, are conducted by VNSW occupational, physical and speech therapists.

Additionally, as part of the ATVN program, during a typical season, VNSW administers over 1,400 flu shots to members of the Westchester Community.
