Regarding Tylenol #3 (with codeine), I have had some reactions to it and I'm not sure if it would be allergic. Obviously, I took the medicine for pain, but an hour after taking the dose I had a numbness all over my body and was very dizzy. I also had some nausea and a pain on the right side of my stomach. The next day I was still kind of light-headed throughout the day. What could be the matter?

I have been hearing a lot about auto-immune disorders. They sound positively frightening. Are hypothyroidism and hyperparathyroidism auto-immune disorders? If so, do they ever cure themselves?

I recently saw a news program about hypothyroidism, stating that if you have it during pregnancy, your unborn child could have a lower IQ. The program stated that the symptoms for hypothyroidism were fatigue, depression and dry skin. Those symptoms seem vague; can you give me more information?

My mother-in-law fell and broke her pelvic bone. She laid there for a couple of hours until the nurse, who comes once a day, went to the neighbor and called 911. Where can we get a bracelet or buzzer that she could wear so if she falls again she can get help immediately?

I am taking Voltaren-xr. My left arm and an area across my back are tingling. Is this a side effect of this drug?

I have a lot of pain in my left arm between my shoulder and my elbow. Under the skin it feels lumpy (like little bubbles). It throbs so much during the night that it keeps me awake. I have had bursitis in my shoulder but this is a different kind of pain and is not in my joints but in the fatty part of my arm. Could it be celulitis? I have not had any wound in that area and I can't remember receiving any trauma either.

The reaction depends on your age, medical history, including any history of allergy, or other medications that you are taking at the same time. The symptoms you describe sometime can occur with this medication. I strongly suggest you discuss this with your physician so he can determine what if any change in treatment is necessary.

Hypothyroidism and hyperparathyroidism are listed as auto-immune disorders. The diagnosis is based on the history, symptoms and laboratory tests. They are diseases that are treatable medically or surgically. They do not cure themselves.

Thyroid function in pregnancy usually remains normal, although some clinical manifestations of pregnancy (i.e. warm skin, palpitations) may mimic thyroid dysfunction. The diagnosis of thyroid disease in pregnancy depends on the interpretation of laboratory tests. You may ask your obstetrician for these tests if he/she feels that they are indicated.

Avoid high fat meals within 3.5 hours of taking this drug. If you have a history of allergic reactions to aspirin or other similar drugs, this may be important. The symptoms you described may or may not be an allergic response. I strongly recommend that you discuss your symptoms with your physician.

The symptoms you describe could be an infection, if the area feels warm or tender to the touch and is localized with no spread of pain upwards to the neck, around the back or chest. In any event, I strongly recommend that you consult with your physician so that he can evaluate the exact cause of your problem.
