Summer Alert: Avoiding Congestive
Heart Failure
Certainly there are the obvious
measures to protect yourself in the Summer: wearing a hat in the sun,
using sun screen, staying out of the sun (and in an air-conditioned
room, if possible) during midday. But here are some other practical
suggestions:
- Avoid excessive exercise, keep it
simple, do not over-exert
- Watch out for weight gain
- Avoid canned and other foods with
high salt content
- Do not allow yourself to become
dehydrated
- When sitting on hot days, place
feet in basin of cool water
- Take medications as prescribed and
keep regular appointments with your doctor
- Note shortness of breath when
walking or doing minimal work, and report this to your doctor
- Note and report swelling of hands
or feet in very hot weather
