Blood Pressure Medications:
How They Work


Beta blockers: slow heartbeat rate and diminish heart workload

Diuretics: increase the amount of sodium and water eliminated during urination

Calcium channel blockers: relax muscles lining blood vessels

ACE inhibitors: block chemical actions causing arterial narrowing

Alpha blockers & central alpha agonists: dilate blood vessels by blocking certain nerve actions

Vasodilators: relax blood vessel walls to keep them open
