Assessing Lead Poisoning Risk in Children

If you have a child and can answer any of the following with a "yes," the child is considered high risk for dose lead exposure and should be taken for a blood lead test:

  • Child lives in or regularly visits a pre-1978 structure with peeling and/or chipping paint (don't forget pre-school, daycare, baby sitters, relatives, religious school, etc.).
  • Child lives in/visits a pre-1978 structure undergoing renovation/remodeling.
  • Child regularly interacts with another person undergoing treatment for lead poisoning (i.e., blood lead level higher than 15ug/dL).
  • Child is regularly exposed to adult whose job or hobby involves lead exposure (welding, pottery, construction, etc.).
  • Child lives near a lead source such as an active lead smelter, battery recycling facility, foundry, bridge/tunnel/roadway construction site, firing range, etc.
  • Child lives nearly near a major artery where lead-contaminated dust and soil are generated.
