About Nosebleeds

Nosebleeds are most commonly caused by nasal membranes that are dried out by radiators and other heating during cold weather season. The following can help:

  • Pinch soft nose parts together between your fingers, or press the nose firmly against facial bones.
  • Hold this position for at least 5 minutes.
  • Lie or sit up with your nose elevated above heart level.
  • If the bleeding is persistent, apply ice wrapped in a cloth or sock.

After bleeding stops, to avoid recurrence, don't blow your nose, sneeze "through your mouth," don't bend down and lift anything, don't smoke, and avoid hot liquids for 24 hours.
