FOLIC ACID:
A Vitamin To Help Prevent Birth Defects
|
Folic Acid is a "B"
vitamin women should take every day if they might become pregnant. It
may help reduce the risk of having a baby with certain defects of the
brain and spinal cord. It is most important to have enough folic acid
in your system immediately preceding and during early pregnancy.
The U.S. Public Health Service
and the March of Dimes recommend that you consume 400 micrograms of folic
acid daily, and never more than 1,000 micrograms unless recommended by
your health care provider. Good natural sources of folic acid include
orange juice, green leafy vegetables, peas, beans and liver. Some breakfast
cereals are fortified with folic acid and all "enriched grain"
products now include it. The surest way is to eat a healthy diet and take
a multivitamin supplement daily.
