Laxative Habits
How to break them
|
Here are some tips that can
help people who have developed a dependency on chemical laxatives. Be
sure to consult with your physician to determine that you are not taking
any medications that might be a contributing factor to your problem, or
be affected by the following hi-fiber program:
Weeks 1 and 2
-
Work up to consuming 15
to 17 grams daily of fiber - or more if you guess you are already
getting this much
-
Avoid consuming pastries,
candy, refined sugar, white flour products and excessive meat - all
relatively fiber-free and binding
-
Consume 6 to 8 oz. of liquids
every day
-
Exercise 20 minutes per
day, working up to this gradually if you're generally sedentary
Weeks 3 and 4
- Continue the above program
but increase the fiber you consume by 3 to 5 grams daily (by adding
to your previous dosage about an additional teaspoon of most powdered
fibers)
Beyond 4 Weeks
- If required, continue adding
another 3 to 5 grams (one teaspoon) of fiber every 2 weeks, up to a
maximum of 35 grams
