Hay fever sufferers should
wash their hair at night, to avoid pollen settling on bedding and
pillows. Also avoid tobacco smoke, vehicle exhaust fumes, perfumes,
hairsprays and other such irritants. Other things that help: frequent
hand-washing and staying indoors on high-pollen-count days.
-
Take antihistamines (that
block allergic reactions) before symptoms become evident. Some can
cause drowsiness - check with your physician about new varieties that
make you less sleepy.
-
If anyone in the household
is allergic to dust mites, periodically place rugs and carpets outdoors
in the sun. This heats and dries them out, helping to eliminate the
mites.
-
Moving does not necessarily
guarantee relief from allergies. Many develop allergies to their new
region's pollens and most allergy-provoking grasses are present throughout
the world. Other solutions may be required.
-
Most conditions thought
of as "food allergies" really are not - they are actually
signs of digestive problems, food poisoning or stress.
