Glaucoma - a leading cause
of blindness because of increased fluid pressure in the eye - is one of
the U.S.'s leading causes of blindness. One of the reasons is that many
people at risk of glaucoma are not going for the routine testing they
need. Glaucoma can slowly and silently damage vision, yet many do not
become aware until late in the disease's progress. The earlier it is caught,
the better, and several effective treatments are now available, including
medication, laser therapy or surgery.
The best defense is regular
eye exams. This includes tonometry (measuring pressure in the eye) and
opthalmoscopy (looking into the eye with a special light). Recommended
frequency is every 3 to 5 years after age 38, and every 1 to 2 years after
age 64 or if you are though to be at risk. Factors that can increase your
risk include diabetes, African ancestry, family history of glaucoma, high
blood pressure, near-sightedness, and history of cortisone use or eye
surgery.
