In "seasoned citizens,"
depression is a common difficulty often overlooked and simply attributed
to aging. This includes many physical ailments, appetite changes and problems,
which may be age-related but could also be due to depression. More direct
symptoms of depression include crying episodes, prolonged feelings of
sadness or loss, inability to function normally and enjoy former pleasures,
and avoiding social interactions.
Here are some ways to help
ease depression:
-
Recognize it, and accept
that to some degree it is a normal response to the many challenges
and adjustments of aging.
-
Allow time to adapt.
-
Trust in your own strength
to "get you through" but don't hesitate to request assistance.
-
Get lots of rest, exercise
and healthy foods.
-
Stay in touch with friends
with common interests.
-
Engage regularly in challenging
mental and creative activities that give you a sense of accomplishment
and satisfaction.
-
Avoid overuse of alcohol,
which compromises ability to cope and can bring on depression.
