While sudden bursts of loud
noise can damage your hearing, regular loud noise can cause gradual but
permanent damage. Here are some tips:
-
Protect your ears with
foam plugs when around 90-decibel sources such as leaf blowers, lawn
mowers, motorcycles and shop tools. These plugs can lower sound levels
by 25 decibels.
-
Choose quiet activities
over noisy ones whenever possible.
-
Use sound-dampening materials
at home and in the workplace: rubber mats under kitchen appliances,
heavy curtains, carpeting, sound-absorbing ceiling tiles, partitions,
etc.
-
Lower the volume on stereos
and TV's, and avoid overuse of headphones that can blast up to 115
decibels (sufficient to cause permanent damage in under 10 minutes).
-
Have your hearing tested
regularly to keep it fine-tuned and to avoid unnoticeable but nonetheless
gradual loss.
