Tobacco Cessation Program

Visiting Nurse Services in Westchester receives funding from the POW’R To Be Tobacco Free Cessation Center to aid us in assisting members of the Westchester community to stop smoking. In conjunction with this grant VNSW allocates additional funds to help run the Tobacco Cessation Program. The Agency initiated this program 2002 when it received its first grant from the POW’R coalition. The program was originally designed to move patients who smoke, along a continuum of readiness to quit, and to reduce patient smoking by incorporating education and support into the VNSW culture. This change in culture was achieved through changes in policy and practice, designed to encourage our nurses, as the Patient Case Managers, to include tobacco use as a negative health factor that needs to be addressed with the patient during the home visit. Today we continue to work closely with POW’R and have expanded our program to include our patient’s families and the community outreach sites that we visit. VNSW employs a Tobacco Cessation Specialist to implement this important initiative..
