Advanced Wound & Ostomy Care
(Enterostomal Therapy Program)
Enterostomal Therapy is a nursing specialty addressing
the needs of patients with selective disorders of the gastrointestinal,
genitourinary and integumentary systems, such as stomas,
draining wounds, fistulas, stasis ulcers, incontinence and pressure ulcers.
VNSW’s
registered nurse team has specialized training to promote healing in
acute and chronic wounds by ensuring an optimal wound care environment
while eliminating causative factors. The nurse also provides care and
instruction to new ostomy patients in order to prevent complications
and minimize patient anxiety.

Services
- Assessment and evaluation of acute and chronic
wounds with recommendations for appropriate dressing selection
- Management
of draining wounds and fistulas through containment of drainage,
odor control and prevention of skin breakdown
- Promote healing
in acute and chronic wounds by ensuring an optimal wound care environment
and eliminating causative factors
- V.A.C. (Vacuum Assisted
Closure) application of negative pressure device used to help promote
wound healing
- Sharps Debridement: The removal of loose
necrotic tissue with a scalpel in order to allow healthy tissue to
re-grow
- Application of Unna Boot and/or compression therapy
to patients with chronic venous insufficiency
- Post-operative
education and counseling to ostomy patients. Instruction includes
pouch application, skin care and assistance with dietary, sexual
and lifestyle issues
- Incontinence management through recommendations
for containment devices/garments and skin care, plus instruction
in measures to restore continence
- On-site hospital assessments/consultations
of patients with complex wounds and new ostomies
