The stress on the patient and the family can be overwhelming as patients are often confined to bed or a chair.  Now, in addition to providing their clinical expertise and guidance to help patients better manage their conditiions, VNS Westchester's nurses have another "gift" to offer -- Invacare "geri-chairs" -- generously donated by the Rose Art Foundation.

Unprecedented changes in today's healthcare landscape means that home healthcare organizations like VNS Westchester are more vital than ever in ensuring the health of community residents. That, and an abundance of appreciation led a record-breaking crowd of over 200 friends, donors and healthcare partners to generously contribute close to $125,000 to VNS Westchester at its 17th annual benefit gala held May 12 at the Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison.

Hosted by Michael Gargiulo, NBC4 New York Anchor, the gala's awards ceremony honored Frank A. Corvino, chairman of the Greenwich Hospital Foundation as recipient of VNSW's Distinguished Service Award. and Dr. Sumir Sahgal, chief medical officer of EssenMed House Calls, recipient of the agency's Community Leadership Award.

Proceeds from the Spring Benefit Gala directly support VNS Westchester's efforts to provide expanded programs, complimentary care services, and charitable care for its home healthcare patients in Westchester, the Bronx, Dutchess, Putnam and Rockland counties. Funds also support the wide range of free community health education programs and services that the agency provides to seniors and other populations in the five-county area it serves. The annual event is critical in helping the nonprofit agency to fulfill its mission, as many of the services it provides are not reimbursable by government or other sources.

Last week, members of the Visiting Nurse Services in Westchester (Putnam branch office), were heralded as heroes by members of the Putnam Legislature during its Health Committee meeting.  Mary McGuigan of Mahopac (at left in photo above), attended the session with nurse Kristin McGowan (center) and branch manager of our Putnam office, Loretta Molinari (right). Mrs. McGuigan told legislators that had it not been for the expert care received by her husband from the organization, "Bob would not be here today."

Robert McGuigan suffered a severe burn last year during a freak accident. He underwent triple by-pass surgery and developed multiple infections in incisions while hospitalized.  "When Bob came home from the hospital, nurse Kristin and her colleagues were here to assist like no one did at the medical center. She cleansed his wounds and treated the burns--seven days a week for more than six months. The angels saved my Bob's life! Kristin became part of our family!"
